Entertainment: What makes Calgary as cutting edge and sophisticated as Stanford and Princeton? We have our own Laptop Orchestra!!

Liberating computers from the tedium of emails, word and accounting, ALE (ACAD Laptop Ensemble) explores the boundaries of laptops as a collaborative music-making instrument. Part improvisational jazz, part ambient soundscape and part club-culture rave party, ALE generates an inspired journey through music and sound in each performance.

Jennie Vallis is a fourth-year Media Arts and Digital Technologies student at the Alberta College of Art + Design. Currently she has been working on building innovative new tools for both sound and dance performances. After three years of spinning records in the Calgary nightlife, she is now producing her own electronic music in addition to playing live solo performances under the name Jennie O(hama). Her interactive instruments/environments and live performances have been exhibited at a number of music festivals including Motion Notion Festival, One Yellow Rabbit’s High Performance Rodeo, The Happening New Media Festival and Sled Island Music Festival. Jennie performs both solo live laptop and turntable performances in addition to being a member of the ACAD Laptop Ensemble (ALE).

And did we all huddle around a tiny little laptop monitor? Squinting? Jostling for the merest glimpse of fresh new software? No, we only had to gaze upwards, upon the fancy new video projection screen paid for by Microsoft (via John Bristowe, who was MIA and therefore unable to appreciate it’s beauty). Hey, say what you want about Microsoft, at least they don’t sell you a game console featuring Linux compatibility, then retroactively drop the feature a year later with a machine crippling firmware update. Can I sell stuff, then take it back too? No? …shoot.

David Gluzman was on-hand, snapping photos which he then tagged democampcalgary17 and uploaded to Flickr. See, there’s a right way to do something, and there’s a wrong way. Properly tagging photos and uploading at high resolution is the right way. Making a customer choose between online gamplay and running Ubuntu on their PS3 after bragging about the feature as a selling point over the X-Box 360 is the wrong way.

Looking back, DemoCampCalgary has come quite a ways… out first DemoCamp was held back in April of 2007 at University of Calgary. That was only 2 years after SONY shipped CDs infected with rootkits to their paying customers in 2005! Ah, the memories. I’d almost forgotten!

Here’s hoping we’ll see you at DCC18, in approximately 2 months time.

UPDATE:
If anyone wants to use DemoCamp footage to promote their product, I’d suggest either grabbing the high quality render from Internet Archive, or checking out YouTube’s “start” parameter for embeds, or “t” parameter for hyperlinks.

There’s nothing sadder then a losing video quality for no good reason. Except maybe a puppy with 3 legs. Or a PS3 without Linux.

On April 27th, come on down to SeVen RestoLounge before 6:30pm to grab a beer before the demos start.

We’re posting far in advance of our next DemoCamp. FYI, it’s April 27th, at 6:30pm at Seven RestoLounge. We’re mixing it up a little this time and going with a different format. Here’s the plan:

- 30 second pitches on your website, needing help, needing employees, etc

-an ignite presentation or two

What does this mean for you? It means you can let us know if you are interested in participating! We’ve yet to see any Ignite-style demos in Calgary and think this is a great opportunity to practice your skills!

What does all of this mean for you? Well, there’s still room for you to demo. Also, there’s a rumor that if you get to District earlier, you’ll be able to take advantage of Happy Hour (for those of you not paying attention, that’s a win-win – no over-priced beer from *that other place* AND even cheaper drinks due to happy hour). This is good news people, this is good news.  Put on your sociable pants and come on down.
